AC Not Cooling in Sedona? 7 Things to Check Before You Call

It’s 98 degrees, the house is getting warmer, and the AC is either silent or blowing warm air. Before you pay for a service call, a few simple checks fix a surprising number of problems. If none of these work, you’ll at least be able to tell the technician exactly what’s going on.
1. Check the thermostat
Make sure it’s set to Cool (not Heat, Fan or Auto-changeover stuck in the wrong mode) and the set temperature is below the room temperature. Replace the batteries if the display is dim or blank. In vacation rentals, guests sometimes switch the system to Heat or Off without realizing it.
2. Look at the breaker panel
Monsoon storms and power blips often trip the breaker for the outdoor unit or air handler. Reset a tripped breaker once. If it trips again right away, leave it off — that points to an electrical problem that needs a pro.
3. Replace the filter
A clogged filter chokes airflow and can cause the indoor coil to freeze. Sedona’s red dust makes filters load up faster than in most places. Checking monthly during summer is a good habit.
4. Check the outdoor unit
Is the fan spinning? Is the unit humming but not running? Is the coil caked with dust, leaves or cottonwood fluff? Turn the power off before rinsing the coil gently with a hose — never use a pressure washer.
5. Look for ice
Ice on the refrigerant lines or indoor coil means airflow or refrigerant trouble. Turn the system to Off (leave the fan On) to let it thaw, and call for service. Running a frozen system can damage the compressor.
6. Check vents and the condensate line
Closed or blocked vents reduce cooling. Many systems also have a float switch that shuts the AC off if the condensate drain backs up — a clogged drain line is a common and inexpensive fix.
7. Look for rodent damage
Pack rats are common around Sedona and can chew wiring in outdoor units. If you see nesting material or chewed wires, don’t touch anything — call a technician.
When to stop and call: burning smells, breakers that keep tripping, ice on the lines, a loud grinding or screeching noise, or an outdoor unit that hums but won’t start.
Keeping it from happening again
- Schedule a tune-up in spring before the heat arrives.
- Keep 2 feet of clearance around the outdoor unit.
- Change filters monthly in summer.
- Add surge protection if storms keep taking out your system.
