How to Check a Contractor’s License in Arizona (and Why It Matters)

Sedona attracts contractors from all over Arizona — especially after storms and during busy seasons. Most are honest professionals. A two-minute license check is the easiest way to make sure yours is one of them.

Look up the license

Go to the Arizona Registrar of Contractors website (roc.az.gov) and use the contractor search. You can search by business name, license number or the person’s name. Check that the license is active, that it covers the type of work you need (for example, plumbing or electrical), and whether there are complaints or disciplinary actions.

The handyman exemption

Arizona generally lets unlicensed handymen take small jobs: under $1,000 total including labor and materials, no building permit required, and not part of a larger project. Unlicensed handymen are also supposed to disclose that they aren’t licensed in their advertising. If your project is bigger than that, hire a licensed contractor.
